Spring Hardscape Inspection: What Michigan Winters Do to Patios & Walkways

The first 60-degree day in April is one of the best of the year. Coffee on the patio, finally. A walk around the yard to see what came through. And for most homeowners in Novi, Canton, and the surrounding towns — most of it came through in good shape.

A well-built patio is designed to handle a Michigan winter. Still, spring is the right moment to walk your hardscape and check on it. Twenty minutes on a Saturday can flag the small stuff while it’s still easy to address, and set you up for a summer of using the space instead of thinking about it.

After two decades of building and caring for hardscapes around Wayne and Oakland counties, we’ve found something reassuring: most spring repairs, caught early, are quick wins.

How winter works on stone and concrete

Southeast Michigan runs through around 50 freeze-thaw cycles a winter. Water finds its way into joints, micro-cracks, and under bedding sand. It freezes, expands about 9%, and materials flex a little. Sun comes out, things thaw, and almost everything returns close to where it started.

Almost. Over time, a few spots shift slightly — and those are exactly what a spring walkaround catches. The good news: most of what moves in winter can be put back with a broom, a bag of sand, and an hour of daylight.

The paver patio walkaround

Start with a slow walk across the surface — barefoot if the weather cooperates. You’ll feel the high spots (we call them lippage points) before you see them. A quarter inch is the threshold worth addressing, and resetting a single paver is honestly one of the more satisfying DIY jobs out there. Pull it, re-level the bedding sand, tap it back in.

Check the joints next. If the polymeric sand between pavers has washed down below the edges, topping it up is a half-day job that pays off all season. The sand is what keeps the pavers locked together — refresh it, sweep it in, mist it to activate, and you’re set.

Look at the edges of the patio. Edge restraints keep everything tight at the perimeter, and they’re easy to re-secure if frost has loosened them. A quick fix that saves drift later.

If you spot a white, chalky bloom on the pavers — that’s efflorescence. Mineral salts working their way to the surface. Purely cosmetic, and a stiff brush with a paver-specific cleaner clears it up. One tip: skip the high-pressure washer here. A gentler approach gets better results without forcing extra water into the pavers.

Concrete walkways

Concrete doesn’t flex the way pavers do, so it tells a slightly different story. The encouraging part is that the most common spring findings are both easy to spot and easy to address.

Surface spalling — a bit of flaky texture on the top layer — tends to show up where deicing salt sat over the winter. Catching it early is key, and a quality resurfacing product can bring the surface back to looking sharp. Once you’ve resurfaced, a fresh coat of concrete sealer in May will carry the walkway through many more winters in good shape.

If a slab has lifted slightly at a joint, mudjacking (lifting with a grout injection) is a proven way to level it back out, often at a fraction of replacement cost. And the expansion joints — those grooves cut every 8 to 10 feet — are worth a quick look too. Re-caulking them with a flexible sealant is a 30-minute spring ritual that pays real dividends.

Retaining walls

Walls are the hardscape element most people forget to check, and they’re actually one of the easier ones to assess. Stand at one end and sight down the face. A well-built segmental wall should read arrow-straight.

Walk behind the wall if you can get back there. If the soil looks settled or the drain tile is peeking out, a little grading and fresh mulch puts it right. Good drainage behind a wall is the single biggest factor in how long it lasts — a small refresh each spring keeps the system working the way it should.

For shorter walls (under 3 feet) with minor shifting, a partial rebuild is often a satisfying weekend project. Taller walls or walls holding back real grade are worth a professional look — not because anything’s wrong, but because that’s the kind of feature you want to keep in great shape for the long haul.

Your spring checklist

Twenty minutes, a Saturday morning, and a cup of coffee is all it takes:

Walk the patio and note anything that rocks underfoot. Sweep the joints and top up sand where it’s needed. Run your eye along the edges. Glance at the concrete for any spalling or cracks worth sealing. Sight down the retaining walls. Note any spots where water pools — useful information for a small drainage tweak before summer.

Most of what turns up in a spring walkthrough is quick work. Handling it in April means the rest of the season is yours — for dinners out back, kids running around, and enjoying the space you invested in. A well-cared-for hardscape is one of those features that genuinely rewards a little attention each year, and Michigan springs give you the perfect window to do it.
